Harwich International Port
Harwich International Port (HWH) is one of the UK's leading multi-purpose freight and passenger ports with excellent road and rail links to the Midlands, London and the South East. It is ideally located for North Sea freight and passenger traffic to and from Scandinavia and the Benelux countries, offering first class ro-ro, ferry, container and bulk operations.
HWH is a member of the Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH) Group. HPH, a subsidiary of the multinational conglomerate Hutchison Whampoa Limited (HWL), is the world's leading port investor, developer and operator with interests in a total of 49 ports, spanning 25 countries throughout Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, the Americas and Australasia. HPH also owns a number of transportation-related service companies.
Harwich International Port has been receiving cruise ships since 1996 and is a well established port for ships cruising in Northern Europe. In 2008 there were 53 turnaround calls and a record 7 transit calls from cruise ships, with 133,660 passengers.
For small ships, 3 anchorage options are available (outside of winter bird breeding season) - the most stunning of these being in Stour River in an area where saltmarsh and intertidal mudflats adjoin ancient sweet chesnut woods forming the RSPB Stour Estuary reserve which are linked by the Essex Way footpath. It is a beautiful area on the very edge of Constable Country. For a virtual tour of the area please visit the The Harwich Society site
